10th Space Summer School Begins at IST

The Institute of Space Technology (IST) has launched the 10th Space Summer School (SSS), welcoming more than 70 students from over 30 schools across Pakistan. The week-long program is designed to inspire students from Grades 6 to 12 by introducing them to the exciting world of space science, astronomy, engineering, and emerging technologies.

The initiative is being organized by the Space Education Research Lab (SERL) under the National Center of GIS and Space Applications (NCGSA). Through a combination of expert lectures, laboratory sessions, interactive demonstrations, and hands-on STEM activities, students will gain practical knowledge beyond the traditional classroom.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Najam Abbas Naqvi, Chairman of NCGSA and Program Director of the Space Summer School, said that introducing space science and STEM education at an early stage is essential for preparing the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators. He emphasized that investing in young talent is crucial for supporting Pakistan’s growing space and technology sector.

The academic curriculum covers five major themes: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Earth and Atmosphere, Aviation, Rocketry, and Satellite Technology. Students will explore topics including the Solar System, radio astronomy, satellite imagery, climate science, UAV technology, helicopter aerodynamics, artificial intelligence, satellite navigation, planetary habitability, and rocket engineering.

One of the program’s biggest attractions is its practical learning experience. Participants will build and launch Aqua Rockets and CanSat models, design and fly remote-controlled aircraft, conduct solar observations, and take part in engineering workshops. Students will also visit the IST Astronomical Observatory and the Propulsion Engineering, Research and Launch Laboratory (PEARL) to experience advanced research facilities firsthand.

Since its launch in 2017, the Space Summer School has become one of Pakistan’s leading STEM education initiatives. The program has trained more than 2,750 students from over 546 schools and colleges, with support from over 228 national and international experts. It continues to promote innovation, scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among young learners.

The initiative also supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting quality education, technological innovation, environmental awareness, and collaboration between educational institutions, researchers, industry, and government organizations. Officials believe such programs will play a key role in developing Pakistan’s future workforce in space technology, artificial intelligence, aerospace engineering, and scientific research.
