Punjab is moving ahead with examination reforms aimed at making the marking process more transparent, consistent and reliable for students across the province.
The proposed changes are part of wider discussions on improving the assessment system of Punjab’s educational boards. The Higher Education Department has held a consultative session with the Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen (PBCC), focusing specifically on reforms in board examinations and assessment practices.
Under the revised approach, greater importance will be given to structured marking schemes and rubrics. Instead of relying only on an overall impression of an answer, examiners can use defined criteria to award marks according to the requirements of each question.

This approach is designed to make marking more objective and consistent. Students who correctly address the required points in a question can receive marks according to the prescribed criteria.
The reform is particularly important because the Punjab boards conduct examinations for thousands of Matric and Intermediate students every year. A standardized evaluation process can help reduce differences in marking between examiners.
According to BISE Lahore’s existing examination information, answer-script marking is already carried out by appointed teachers using detailed marking schemes. The board describes these schemes as guidelines for examiners when evaluating students’ answers.
The proposed reforms could further strengthen this process by introducing clearer question-wise assessment criteria and improving feedback from paper markers.
Examiners may also be required to provide observations about question papers and marking procedures. Such feedback can help boards identify questions that create confusion and improve future examination papers.
The broader objective is to improve transparency, fairness and quality in board examinations. Punjab officials have also discussed learning from assessment practices used by organisations including IBCC, FBISE, Aga Khan University Examination Board and Cambridge International.
Students should note that the exact implementation details, including the subjects, examination sessions and specific marking rubrics, should be followed through official notifications from the relevant Punjab board.

The reform could eventually give students a more predictable marking process, where marks are awarded according to clearly defined requirements rather than differences in individual examiner judgment.
