Punjab to Establish AI Labs in Government Schools Across the Province

The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB) has approved a major education reform by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) education for primary school students. The initiative aims to equip children with future-ready digital skills and prepare them for an increasingly technology-driven world.

Under the proposed plan, AI will be introduced as a separate subject for students up to Grade 5. Alongside the new curriculum, the government plans to establish AI laboratories in selected primary schools, allowing students to gain practical experience through hands-on learning.

Education officials said the curriculum is being designed to teach students the basics of artificial intelligence, logical thinking, problem-solving, coding concepts, digital literacy, and responsible use of technology. The lessons will focus on age-appropriate learning rather than complex programming.

To support the initiative, the provincial government will recruit qualified AI and technology educators on a contract basis. This step is necessary because most public schools currently do not have teachers with specialized knowledge in artificial intelligence and related technologies.

The project will be implemented in two phases. During the first phase, AI will become part of the primary school curriculum. In the second phase, modern AI and science laboratories will be established in schools to provide students with practical exposure to emerging technologies.

Officials have also prepared an alternative strategy if financial resources become limited. Instead of launching a separate subject immediately, basic AI concepts will be integrated into existing science and computer studies textbooks, ensuring that students still receive foundational knowledge.

The initiative is part of Punjab’s broader efforts to modernize the education system and align it with global learning trends. Around the world, countries are introducing AI, robotics, coding, and digital skills at an early stage to prepare students for future careers in technology and innovation.

The proposed curriculum is expected to receive final approval during an upcoming board meeting. Once approved, the government plans to begin implementation in the 2027 academic session, making Punjab one of the first provinces in Pakistan to introduce Artificial Intelligence education at the primary level.

Education experts believe the move could significantly improve students’ critical thinking, creativity, digital literacy, and innovation skills, helping prepare a new generation for the rapidly evolving digital economy.
