In a significant advancement for Pakistan’s healthcare and medical education system, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) has approved the country’s first-ever PhD Nursing program. The initiative is designed to elevate nursing education to the highest academic level and improve research capacity in the healthcare sector.
The decision was finalized by the Specialty Advisory Committee of UHS, which approved the full curriculum for the doctoral program. Officials say this marks a major transformation in the professional development pathway for nurses in Pakistan, opening opportunities for advanced research, leadership roles, and academic careers.

According to official details, the program will initially offer 20 seats in its first batch. Admission will be highly competitive, requiring candidates to achieve at least 75% marks in the entry test, ensuring only top-performing nursing professionals are selected for the program.
UHS Vice Chancellor Professor Ahsan Waheed Rathore stated that the initiative aims to produce highly skilled nursing researchers and educators who can contribute to strengthening Pakistan’s healthcare system. He added that the country has long faced a shortage of qualified nursing faculty, and this program will help bridge that gap.
The introduction of a PhD-level qualification in nursing is expected to enhance evidence-based medical practices in hospitals, improve patient care standards, and support the development of modern healthcare policies. Experts believe this step will also increase Pakistan’s alignment with global nursing education standards.
